MEDIA RELEASE:

Just off-the-‘spoor’, situated in the historic Elgin Station on the Glen Elgin farm, the Winters Drift Tasting Station now offers a culinary component with the launch of their Platform 1 eatery. Further enhancing this charming atmosphere of rural bliss, this delightful new railway-style café promises to complement the Winters Drift’s ‘elegantly Elgin’ new vintage- and new release wines.

Few wine ranges can tell a more captivating story than the extensive history of Winters Drift wines which honour the remarkable story of two pioneering and philanthropic bachelor brothers, Ted and Harry Molteno. Just as the brothers’ legacy dramatically changed the face of Elgin, so too did the railroad and the Elgin Station, built on their Glen Elgin farm, provide the crucial fast route for the valley’s burgeoning deciduous fruit industry to Cape Town and the growing export trade. This rich heritage bestows integrity and authenticity upon Winters Drift wines and infuses the location of their unique tasting venue and new eatery with an air of timelessness and nostalgia.

TASTING STATION

The original railway line, which runs through Glen Elgin farm, is still operational today, with two to three grain-laden trains passing through daily, faithfully retaining the atmosphere of the hustle and bustle of the Elgin Station in its heyday. On arrival, one is ‘transported’ back in time, greeted by the quaint old ticket office, and the elegant Molteno brothers’ 100 year old mantle clock which personifies the passage of time (and is also depicted on the wine labels). Meander through the wealth of memorabilia, chancing across vintage suitcases, original railway benches and antique telephones while station masters’ caps, adorning the walls, are tipped as if to welcome ‘travellers’. So, stop the clock, come along and relax and soak up the old world charm. Brace the winter chill, reclining in a cosy armchair beside a roaring coal fire in the ‘waiting room’, and taste the Winters Drift fine wines atop a counter made from old railway sleepers.

PLATFORM 1

Platform 1, a delightful railway café, is the latest exciting addition to the Winters Drift Tasting Station. The establishment’s informal ambience lends itself to the timelessness of this railway setting. Serving delectable seasonally-inspired dishes, served on wooden boards, with a commitment to local and sustainable ingredients, Platform 1 is a must stop-off in Elgin.

Start your ‘journey’ through the day with ciabatta, toasted to perfection, accompanied by eggs, slow-roasted tomatoes, bacon, sausage and mushrooms, served on a wooden board. Wash this delectable fare down with a cup of freshly-brewed, piping hot coffee while browsing the newspaper.

Or refresh yourself with a mid-journey pit-stop and relish a railway-style lunch where the innovative and well-priced black-board menu changes daily, making for an adventurous gourmet journey. Local favourites, however, appear regularly, such as: open sandwiches, on ciabatta, topped with Elgin free-range chicken, slow oven-roasted tomatoes, hummus and toasted nuts, drizzled with a tangy mustard mayonnaise dressing. Or enjoy the popular Tapas board which offers: home-made chicken- and mince balls with toasted nuts, free-range chicken wings and pesto chicken kebabs, caramelised pear and blue cheese spring-rolls, Brie and Camembert cheese wedges, cherry tomatoes, home-baked ciabatta, quince jelly and aromatic rosemary-infused olives. Daily features also include hearty country-style soups and stews, burgers and steaks grilled to perfection, or, on the lighter side, enjoy home-made quiches and fresh, creatively-crafted salads.

On a more indulgent note, Wednesdays are ‘Koek-en-Tee’ days at Platform 1. Enjoy a cup of tea or coffee from the renowned Bean There Company. The cakes, which differ each week, include decadent offerings like lemon meringue pie, baked cheese cake, carrot cake with caramelised lemon and walnuts, double chocolate cake, and lemon poppy seed cakes to name but a few.

The experience is cosy and relaxed and the dishes are complemented by the Winters Drift range of fine wines which can be ordered by the glass, at only R20 to R35 per glass, or share a bottle, served at cellar door prices.

All the grapes for Winters Drift wines are grown on Glen Elgin farm and made under the meticulous and watchful care of Elgin winemakers: Kobie Viljoen of Gabriëlskloof and Koen Roose of Spioenkop.
