REUBEN’S ONE&ONLY PRESENTS ITS STELLAR 2013 WINE & DINE DIARY

ONE&ONLY CAPE TOWN’s Head Sommelier, Luvo Ntezo, and celebrity chef, Reuben Riffel, have worked with some of the top winemakers in the country during the past two years to present these fabulous Wine&Dine evenings – where the finest ingredients are transformed into culinary delights, and perfectly paired with the very best of South African wines. Joined this year by celebrity personality and MC, Aubrey Ngcungama, these evenings are guaranteed to be enjoyed by all. Here’s what guests can look forward to over the coming months.

The Wine&Dine series launches in style with one of South Africa’s oldest and most prestigious estates. Boschendal has long been regarded as one of the finest makers of sparkling wine in SA, but under cellarmaster JC Bekker and winemaker Lizelle Gerber, they are gradually carving a new niche for themselves as makers of premium quality still wines as well. With a Five Star Platter award for their Cecil John Reserve Shiraz, their Wine&Dine event on 27th February will marry the very best wines with exciting and innovative food combinations to set the bar for the rest of the year.

In March Luvo, Reuben and Aubrey will be showcasing ‘False Bay’s Burgundy’ as they team up with Hamilton Russell Vineyards from Walker Bay. Anthony Hamilton Russell has been making Pinot Noir and Chardonnay for more than 20 years and is widely-regarded as one of SA’s top producers of these classic varieties. The Hamilton Russell Wine&Dine on 27th March will demonstrate the grapes’ many layers and nuances in a celebration of cool-climate winemaking.

April sees One&Only Cape Town welcome one of the founding fathers of the South African wine industry as Neil Ellis Wines host the dinner on the 24th of the month. Neil Ellis is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of the modern wine industry in this country and is responsible for groundbreaking work in opening up new regions and grape varieties to a wider audience. His wines have been consistently excellent for decades and an audience with Neil is definitely not to be missed.

On the 29th May, one of South Africa’s most exciting, up-and-coming estates will be joining the One&Only team for dinner. De Grendel Wines from Durbanville has been bottling wine under their own label for less than a decade, but their wines are already featured on the wine lists of some of the finest restaurants in the country. Cellarmaster Charles Hopkins is a raconteur of note and an evening of great tales, food and wine is in store for all.

The ‘Father of Fizz’, Johan Malan of Simonsig, will be hosting the Wine&Dine event on 26th June, bringing his award-winning range of Cap Classiques to the table. Johan’s family were the first people to produce a bottle-fermented wine in South Africa more than 40 years ago but far from resting on their laurels, they also make fantastic red and white wines promising some exciting pairings for diners.

The following month, the One&Only team welcomes Kanonkop on the 31st July. World-renowned as top Pinotage producers, they only make wines from red grapes so dines can expect some hearty, winter warmers, perfectly paired with their rich, robust red wines. A winter’s treat for all concerned!

The 28th August is the date for one of the ‘dark horses’ of the South African wine world – The Bernard Series from Bellingham. This winery makes a wide range of wines from entry-level right up to some of the most interesting and unusual varieties, which are made and bottled under this range, named after the pioneering winemaker in the 1940’s, Bernard Podlashuk. These brilliantly handcrafted wines are only made in very small quantities and offer exciting potential for creative food and wine-matching – a challenge which Luvo and Reuben look forward to with anticipation!

Leaving the unusual for the familiar, 25th September sees the arrival of the King of Chardonnay, Danie de Wet from De Wetshof Wines. With a range of Chardonnays to convert even the most ardent ABC-er (Anything But Chardonnay!), Danie and his sons Pieter and Johann take the world’s most versatile grape variety to new heights, whilst continuing to make great red wines as well on their Robertson farm.

If versatile is what you crave, then the wines of golfing legend, Ernie Els, are sure to fit the bill! Whilst not actually making the wines himself (he leaves that to ex-Cape Winemakers Guild Chairman, Louis Strydom), his eponymous range shows the same dedication, precision and attention to detail, which have made him such a huge golfing success. Previously, just a red wine producer, in recent years Louis and Ernie have introduced some white wines to great acclaim, inspiring wonderful spring food and wine matches which can be enjoyed on 30th October.

The final Wine&Dine of the year will be hosted by a true Cape legend – Achim von Arnim of Haute Cabrière. Achim was one of the first people to make a Cap Classique in South Africa and his Pierre Jourdan range remains one of the most popular brands in the country. With plenty of tales, forthright opinions and heartwarming anecdotes, the von Arnims invite you to be part of their family for a very special evening on 27th November, bringing the 2013 One&Only Wine&Dine series to a close in style.

All the dinners are limited as to numbers, and each is priced at R350.00 per person offering a high quality and excellent value evening out.
