Tasters and wines at IWSC

It was wonderful to attend this event again. Certainly far more wines than people in the room but such a privilege to get to taste such a huge array of fine wines at one time. As usual the international wines were finished within the hour. The three international wines that stood out for me were:

  • Carpené Malvolti Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore 2011 – an extra-dry from Italy
  • Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese 2010 – sweet style from Germany
  • McGuigan BIN 9000 Semillon 2004 – loved the complexity age added

From the selection of medal winners on the day my favourites were:

  • Domaine des Dieux Claudia Brut MCC 2007 – complexity, layered fruit and savoury edge
  • Strandveld Adamastor 2010 – picked as my favourite white at Nederburg Auction in 2012
  • FMC 2010 – stood out amongst the range of Chenin Blanc’s with most style’s on the sweeter style
  • Hartenberg The Eleanor Chardonnay 2009 – the only 2009 in the Chardy lineup
  • Gabrielskoof Magdalena 2010 – mineral, terroir driven blend of Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc

  • Kaapzicht Steytler Pinotage 2008 – another estate that came out in my favourites at Nederburg Auction
  • Romond Vineyards Rebus 2007 – soft, integrated, earthy character from Cabernet Franc dominated blend
  • Saronsberg Full Circle 2010 – still a little young but does “full circle” on taste buds too
  • Muratie Ansela Van de Caab 2009 – a big, bold, juicy Cabernet Sauvignon dominated blend

Deadline for entries for 2013 close on Friday 28th June. See www.iwsc.net
