KGB Wine Club – Louis & Saltare

KGB Wine Club Tasting

It has been an absolute joy to host Louis and Saltare wines as my boutique wineries for September and October.

KGB Wine Club - Kenilworth

I first came across Carla Pauw when I tasted the Crios Bride range of wines she made for Neil Yorke Smith which I thoroughly enjoyed.  I then bumped into her doing a tasting on her own Saltare range at the V&A Waterfront earlier this year and we haven’t looked back since 🙂 Saltare (www.saltare.co.za) means “to dance” in Latin and that is how Carla feels when able to follow her passion and make the incredible wines she does.  Carla and I have a lot in common, most prominent of which is our love of bubbly!  Carla makes an amazing range of three Method Cap Classic’s of which we tasted two at the wine club tastings.  Her Brut Nature NV, a fresh MCC with a fine, delicate mousse, biscuity aromas on the nose and lemon, strawberry, gooseberry and lime zest flavours on the palate, and the Brut Reserve 2007 which spent 36 months on the lees offering brioche, almond and biscuity aromas followed by layers of honey, peach, almond and lemon on the palate with a long, complex, creamy finish. The Saltare Chenin Blanc 2009 was a crowd pleaser of note!  There is a refreshing minerality to this complex yet delicate wine which complements the dried apricot, lemon, fresh peaches and lanolin with the creamy mouth texture perfectly.

Saltare & Louis line-up

Louis Nel, of ex Vergelegen, Warwick and Hidden Valley fame, contacted me last year showing interest in participating in my wine club.  Patience proved  worthwhile for both of us.  Not only were his red wines a perfect match with Carla’s sparkling and still wines, but we got to include his first ever Sauvignon Blanc made under his own label as well!  Louis (www.louiswines.com) always tells his story of how his life in wine was written in the stars when his mom had no food colouring for his first birthday cake and ended up improvising with red wine……….  Needless to say Louis has carried on the tradition with his daughters first birthday cake recently 🙂

Not only are his wines flavoursome and enjoyable but his labels are a delight to look at as well!

Louis Sauvignon Blanc 2010

Louis Cab/Merlot 2007

Whilst several people speak about being ‘sauvignon blanc’ed out” this one sparked a delightful, renewed interest amongst us all.  Louis describes it as “zippy, zappy , zingy, zangy, frisky as a Jack Russell. Made from Darling grapes, cold fermented to preserve as much fruit as possible, and then nurtured like my own daughter, until the wine is safely in the bottle.”  The Cabernet Sauvignon (52%) / Merlot(48%) blend is made from a tiny piece of land in the Helderberg, aged separately then spending 24 months in oak.  Beautiful colour, fruity flavours with mint and integrated tannins.  His flagship, an expressive Cabernet Sauvignon 2007, has wild berries, ripe plum, cassis and luscious cedar which all compliment the soft chewy tannins that create a lingering finish.  My wine club always know the big guns are coming out when the decanter is used:)

Hushed "decanter pouring" silence

All these wines were enjoyed at well attended wine club events hosted in Blouberg and Kenilworth.  If you are interested in joining one of the events or wish to host your own function please contact me karen@kgbwine.co.za

Thank you for the positive comments about the wine.

It is always nice to get good feedback, and to see people enjoy my wine. In a sense I feel more like a purveyor of joy, than a winemaker.

Thank you to everybody who participated, and Karen for her help.
