Bartinney & Hermit on the Hill – May 2010

June 6th, 2010 by karen

Bartinney was my “white wine find” at WineX last year.  I immediately spoke to Therese de Beer (their passionate and energetic winemaker / jill-of-all-trades) and we agreed to work together once their new tasting room was open and things had settled down a little.  Bartinney is situated on the hellish high slopes of Helshoogte Pass and overlooks the picturesque Banghoek Valley in Stellenbosch. Passionately involved husband and wife team, Michael and Rose Jordaan, repurchased the 40 ha family farm in 2006 with a vision to create excellent wines and reawaken the charm of the beautiful property. The newly renovated boutique cellar now produces Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay from low yielding vineyards positioned on cooler elevated slopes.

The farm has received Carbon Neutral status and is also dedicated to Biodiversity having planted more than 5000 trees and fynbos, indigenous to the area, on thirteen hectares of rehabilitated land from what was previously a pine and gum plantation.

I came across Hermit on the Hill wines at Wine Concepts in Kloof street in 2009 where I purchased the perfectly drinkable Pinot Noir for a very reasonable price.  Pieter had heard of KGB through Teddy Hall, so when he called me to see if we could meet up I was very excited to meet this man who had been described by the Platter Guide as “… stubborn as an ox and ornery as an ostrich – and he only makes wine when he has the time and inspiration”.  And, inspired he is!

Hermit on the Hill Wines were launched with a maiden vintage 2000 Syrah made in conjunction with Clive Kerr of Coleraine Wines and till today this partnership exists and has grown to include Syrah from Paarl and Durbanville, Pinot Noir as well as Grenache and, most recently, a blend of Syrah, Mourvédre, Grenache and Cinsaut as well as a Viognier.  He has launched 2 white blends which perfectly complement his value for money, obtainable and lip-smacking red wine portfolio
