Hout Bay Vineyards Open Day 29 May 2010

May 30th, 2010 by karen

I met with Cathy several months ago regarding hosting her boutique winery as my “Featured Winery of the Month” for my KGB Wine Club.  I had tasted her MCC at the Bubbly Festival in Franschhoek and wanted to know more about this unique winery in Hout Bay.  The first thing I realised about Cathy was her delight in each bottle of wine she opened, discussed and tasted with me.  Their maiden vintage was in 2004, and they have been producing delicious handcrafted wines ever since. Cathy and Peter are dedicated to nurture each bottle individually to produce the lasting quality one can only achieve with that personal touch.

Hout Bay Vineyards hosted their Open Day yesterday 29th May to launch their latest vintage red wines.  After a little walk from the parking area to their home / cellar alongside their vineyards and amongst the ducks we arrived at the tasting area which was abuzz with Hout Bay Vineyards fans.  The afternoons’ atmosphere was very relaxed with a large open play area for the children and some tables spread across various areas of the garden for people to enjoy a picnic and a bottle of their “favourite of the day”.
We were treated to a little sip of MCC from “behind the table” to kick start us before moving onto their 3 red wines.  All 2008 vintage – a smooth, very fruity Merlot, a rich Cabernet Sauvignon with a tannin structure that will support this wine for several years and Peter’s favourite, the Petrus, which is a Bordeaux style blend consisting of 32%  Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot and 36% Malbec.  Petrus is a beautifully balanced wine with a fantastic mouth-feel that certainly left me wanting more.

It was fabulous to have the opportunity to meet Peter as well, who was brimming with the excitement of the day (though not sure if it was his anticipation of the Bulls win later in the day or the wine tasting that appealed to him more).  Peter mentioned their investment in their new press this year and that he will be holding back about 2/3rds of these 2008 wines to be released at a later stage.  There is justifiably a great demand for their wines and they are currently sold out of their Sauvignon Blanc and Rose. They only have the vines for their MCC planted around their property – the Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier.  Their Sauvignon Blanc is planted on the slopes behind Llandudno and the red grapes are carefully selected by Peter on a yearly basis “depending on where his fancy carries him”.

I will definitely be hosting Hout Bay Vineyards at KGB Wine Club later this year and will keep you posted on the details thereof
